Try: The Hubspot Tracking URL Builder

✉️ Spotter – Your Weekly HubSpot Helper

Tip

Quick fix for a common HubSpot headache.

Use Leads for Cleaner MQL Reporting
If you’ve ever had a nightmare trying to report on contacts who became MQLs multiple times, welcome to the solution.

Lifecycle stages are linear and restrictive, but Leads let you track multiple pre-deal engagements per contact.

That means you can segment MQLs by event, channel, or timing without creating dozens of custom properties or overwriting past data. It’s a massive upgrade for marketing teams that care about attribution.

⚠️ Trap

Mistake to avoid before it causes chaos.

Don't Trust Traffic Sources Blindly
One of the key issues I see with attribution in my client accounts is traffic attribution. Two of the primary culprits are the “direct” and “organic search”. These two sources can mislead an executive team and be the root cause for bad decisions in marketing and sales.

A spike in direct traffic may mean that your company’s domain was shared as plain text on a social platform. A spike in organic search from branded terms might mean the same thing.

My recommendations:
1. Self-reported attribution. Ask people where they are finding out about your business.
2. Use the less common source metrics like “first conversion”, “first page seen”, and “first touch converting campaign” to try to piece together how this traffic made it to your site.

Tracking URL Builder
There are probably over a dozen ways to use hubspot to figure out where traffic, contacts, or deals are coming from. For marketers, this is one of those “holy grail” questions, “where is the ROI?”.

When you have a specific page and you are linking to it from multiple sources (ads, emails, etc.) you might want another layer of safety in being able to separate specific sources. I recommend using the tracking URL builder to make separate tracking links for every place you are linking from.

YES some of this is automatically done by Hubspot anyway, but the tracking URL builder gives you more control over how these visits and contacts get tagged when they come in.
